“Encontro”:

a 100% Portuguese Work of Art

Siza Vieira and Antarte.

Two major Portuguese brands have been invited by the commissioner of the Vatican Pavilion for the next Venice Biennale to create an installation to be exhibited at this prestigious art and culture fair.

An installation of 12 sculptures representing people. Which are figures that approach each other, greet each other, and shake hands.

Geometric figures in the Basilica.

SIZA VIEIRA by ANTARTE

The choice of people statues is related to the theme of meeting in a time of so many disagreements. The geometric figures are somewhat crude, intended to create a contrast with the architecture of the Basilica.

From sculpture to the Pritzker… to sculpture

In his youth, Siza Vieira wanted to be a sculptor and ended up as an architect with a Pritzker Prize, the 'Nobel' of Architecture. Celebrating his 90th birthday, nothing better than giving Siza Vieira the chance to fulfil a youthful desire: to have sculptures on the best stage of design. When Siza is mentioned, the world applauds. For Antarte, the collaboration with the master of architectural masters is almost celestial.

'I see (this project) as a document and a desire. They are geometric figures, somewhat crude but which are going to be placed in a beautiful environment which is basilica in Venice. There is also an intention in that contrast.'

Project with Antarte's DNA

SIZA VIEIRA by ANTARTE

'Antarte started with Art. It makes perfect sense to get involved in projects that incorporate it. The challenge of working with the master of architectural masters, who initially wanted to be a sculptor and now had the opportunity to make sculptures, was irrefutable. Building timeless pieces of art designed by Siza is a project that will remain not only as a mark of Antarte's 25 years but for posterity.'
